About Our Process

Old Goat Wood Turners – Handcrafted pens and other unique items turned on a wood lathe. Made with exceptional care and quality, our turned items are wonderfully unique and make excellent gifts. As experienced wood turners, you can expect quality and care in every Old Goat product.

We use a variety of materials in our items; natural wood, colored resin, and a combination of wood, resin (and sometimes other materials), called hybrids. In addition to the above mentioned materials we also use label cast (a printed image that is applied to a brass tube and encased in a crystal clear resin), fordite and polymer-clay pen blanks.

Finish Details:

On our all resin pieces, we shape and size the item on our lathe. The next steps are to wet sand using a six step sanding process (400-8000 grit), polish using six unique polishing compounds, and finally to buff the body on a buffing wheel.

The process on wood and hybrid bodies is the same with the exception of, prior to sanding we apply up to 12 coats of cyanoacrylate that cures hard and crystal clear or depending on the material we may use another suitable finish.

After the piece is complete, we hand assemble each item. The end result is a beautiful product that is designed to impress and will provide many years of service.
